The U.S.S. Enterprise is ordered to transport Ambassador Robert Fox to the planet Eminiar VII for a diplomatic mission. But when the starship arrives in orbit around the planet it receives a communication warning it away. Captain Kirk and Spock take a landing party and beam to the surface to investigate; here they encounter a young woman named Mea 3, who informs them that her world has been at war with its neighbouring planet of Vendikar for over five-hundred years. She takes them to the council chambers, which they find are packed with banks of computers; Anan 7, the head council, informs Kirk and his party that the two planets have learned to avoid the devastation of war by using computers to wage the conflict; when one of the planets scores a ‘hit’, the people declared to be ‘dead’ willingly walk into antimatter chambers and are immediately vaporised. To Kirk’s dismay, Anan 7 informs him that the Enterprise and all the crewmembers aboard her have been declared casualties - and must be executed immediately…
